SHIPYARD PLANTATION

Situated on the ocean side of Highway #278, south of Palmetto Dunes, is Shipyard Plantation, one of the Hilton Head Island’s original developments. Successfully blending a residential community with a renowned resort destination, Shipyard offers a full spectrum of amenities whether your stay is permanent, seasonal or for the few weeks of an Island vacation.

Amenities at Shipyard include over four miles of trails for biking, jogging and roller-balding. Access to a long stretch of beach, said by many to be the area’s finest, is through Shipyard Beach Club. Pools are available in all visitor areas and there are lagoons for fishing. Shipyard also benefits from the amenities of its resident resort, the Crowne Plaza.

Shipyard has three 9-hole golf courses, famous for their three-time hosting of the Senior PGA Tour. But at Shipyard, it is tennis that rules supreme. Tennis Magazine has dubbed Shipyard Racquet Club, built for Billy Jean King, one of their "50 Greatest Tennis Resorts in America."

THE RESIDENTS

While Shipyard is the permanent home to more retirees and empty nesters than young families, as a vacation destination its prime location and numerous amenities make it popular with all age groups.

THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Shipyard is cleverly designed to accommodate a combination of both residential and resort communities in its approximate 800 acres. Its natural beauty remains evident and unspoiled throughout the plantation. There are more than 2,000 homes including over 250 villas on the rental market within Shipyard Plantation.

SHIPYARD BEACH CLUB

The Shipyard Beach Club offers access to a wide stretch of beautiful beach shared by Shipyard residents, visitors and guests of the Crowne Plaza Resort. An oceanfront clubhouse with kitchen facilities is ideal for private parties and special events and is available for rent by Shipyard residents.

CROWNE PLAZA RESORT

Residents of Shipyard also capitalize on the amenities of The Crowne Plaza, one of Hilton Head’s finest resort hotels. Located on the ocean, the facility offers fine dining and casual fare, nightclubs, meeting rooms, shops, indoor & outdoor swimming pools, and an on-site health club. An outdoor pavilion used for hotel activities and special events within the community is also available. For children, there is a playground and Camp Castaway, an adventure camp for children ages 3-12.

RESTAURANTS

Due to its south-end location, Shipyard is in close proximity to numerous restaurants from casual to fine dining opportunities. In the plantation itself, there is Reflections on the Green at the Golf Club and Portz and Signals in the Crowne Plaza Resort.

Van der Meer SHIPYARD RACQUET CLUB

Tennis at Shipyard features 23 championship courts nestled among magnificent oaks and beautifully landscaped grounds. Covered courts are available in the Shipyard Racquet Club. The club is one of several teaching facilities of world- renowned tennis instructor Dennis VanderMeer. While the most serious players may take advantage of more intensive instruction at any of VanderMeer teaching facilities, VanderMeer Shipyard offers the more casual players a combination of just the right amount of tennis with all the other resort amenities Hilton Head has to offer.

Billie Jean King was the touring pro for Shipyard Plantation in 1974 when the racquet club was built. Almost two decades later her onetime coach and former business partner Dennis VanderMeer bought the racquet club and made major enhancements, including the addition of three indoor courts, the general upgrading of the others, and enhancement of the stadium. Clinics, drill sessions and round robbins are regularly available.

A handsome weathered wood-and-stucco pro shop anchors the complex. Courts are laid out in pairs with refrigerated water fountains and shaded pavilions in between. One of these courts is a stadium with bleachers.

GOLF

Shipyard offers a unique gathering of golf holes - 27 of them to be exact. The nines are named Brigantine, Clipper and Galleon and can be played in any mix-match arrangement. But be prepared - - there is no pushover nine. Fully half of the holes are doglegs, a few quite severe, and water is present on 25 holes! The clever layout of several holes will afford the golfer the chance for a "risk / reward" scenario and there are very few easy holes. Scoring well here is a by-product of good course management. This facility has withstood the test of time and deserves its reputation as being one of the busiest courses on Hilton Head Island.
