Located at the
southern tip of Hilton Head Island is Sea Pines, the oldest and largest
planned community on the Island. Begun in 1957, it was conceived by
Charles Fraser as part of a Master Plan to harmonize architecture with its
natural surroundings. The concept became an environmental standard
mirrored throughout other communities on Hilton Head - and the world.
While Sea Pines itself boasts of more than 5,000 acres, 1300 of them are
devoted to lagoons, forest preserves and green spaces.
Sea Pines is both a resort destination and a residential community. The amenities and attractions that lure vacationers from all over the world are available every day to islanders who make Sea Pines their home. Through meticulous and sensitive planning, residential and visitor developments harmoniously blend with recreational facilities. Found within the borders of Sea Pines are five miles of beach, a 605-acre nature preserve, bird sanctuaries, three swimming pools, two marinas, an equestrian center and a beach club with open air grills and picnic tables. There are 40 miles of biking and jogging paths plus scenic trails through the forest preserve for horseback riding. Lagoons, creeks and the Atlantic Ocean itself are available for fishing. As you might expect, golf and tennis facilities are also plentiful. While Sea Pines Country Club is private, there are three public courses, including the legendary Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the PGA Tour’s MCI Classic. Tennis aficionados have their choice of 80 courts and an internationally- renowned racquet club. Sea Pines offers three separate shopping areas, including illustrious Harbour Town, whose lighthouse inspired the maroon and white Sea Pines logo. When it comes to dining, the choices are extensive - from casual meals under live oaks to first-class dining experiences overlooking the Calibogue Sound. COMMUNITY SERVICES ASSOCIATION (CSA) Residents of Sea Pines belong to the Community Services Association and pay dues based on whether their lot is developed or undeveloped. Fees are applied to maintenance and repair of common areas. Ward Kirby is Executive Vice President of the CSA. Offices are located at 175 Greenwood Drive. 671-1343 CLUBS A variety of club activities based on the interests of the community are available to all CSA members. Information can found in the regularly published Community Newsletter. THE RESIDENTS In general, the residential population of Sea Pines consists of retirees, empty nesters and a smaller percentage of young families. For many, their single family home is a second residence. NEIGHBORHOODS Within Sea Pines, housing density is low. There are over 5,800 single-family homes and approximately 430 villas and homes available for rent by vacationers. In keeping with the philosophy of harmonizing with nature, all structures are designed to blend with their environment. Residential neighborhoods consist of single homes overlooking a golf course or a lagoon, houses nestled in deep-wooded clusters as well as impressive estate-size structures with ocean views. Villas, primarily for short-term use, are scattered throughout the plantation. While amenities in each vary, all vistor areas feature a pool. Most have access to tennis facilities.
TENNIS Until recently Sea Pines was the annual home of the Family Circle Cup, a tournament at Sea Pines Racquet Club that attracted the world's top women tennis players. While the tournament has moved on, tennis remains a major attraction within Sea Pines and Hilton Head itself. Sea Pines Racquet Club has a total of 28 courts and there are others within individual neighborhoods and select vacation villa complexes. GOLF OCEAN COURSE The Ocean Course is Hilton Head’s first, built in 1962 to lure dedicated golfers - and it hasn’t lost its appeal. Set in the heart of Sea Pines Plantation amidst towering oaks and stately pines, this George Cobb design delights residents and guests alike. The beginning holes quickly tell the golfer that shot placement is essential on a front nine that intertwines bunkers and lagoons to snare the errant stroke. The fairways widen a bit as the turn is made but lagoons are ever present. The pines and oaks give way to a majestic setting for the signature hole - #15. A long uphill shot is required to reach this par 3 that has the Atlantic Ocean and the beach as its backdrop and the breeze, a constant companion. The course finishes with a string of three holes meandering through lagoons that command attention as the clubhouse looms ahead. The Ocean Course is located at Sea Pines Drive and Lighthouse Rd. - 842-8484 SEA MARSH COURSE The second public course in Sea Pines also shares the clubhouse with the Ocean Course - but there the similarity ends. This golf experience will demand the best driving abilities since no less than half of the holes are doglegs, further enhanced by bunkers and water. The entire course twists and turns through oaks draped with Spanish moss and overhanging firs that will seize the wayward shot. While the course is relatively short, it is by no means, forgiving. There are holes that can readily offer birdie possibilities but prevailing winds will be yet another factor for a round on this long-standing golf drawing card. The scenic beauty of the course is capped by the broad vista of the short eighteenth hole that requires a careful second shot to a green guarded by the side of the lagoon last seen on the very first tee shot.Sea Marsh shares a clubhouse with the Ocean Course. It is located at Sea Pines Drive and Lighthouse Road - 842-8484 HARBOUR TOWN GOLF LINKS "Masterpiece" is the perfect word to describe this seaside piece of golf perfection. Here, beside the lovely shores of the Calibogue Sound, lies this world-class golf course that thrills and daunts professionals as well as the average golfer. Pete Dye, in consultation with Jack Nicklaus, designed this course in 1969 and it has handily withstood the test of time. "Unique" is another word that depicts this layout. Here the railroad tie became a fixture as a golf course icon. The front nine, long and twisting, requires placement of almost every shot. The driver is kept covered as the ninth tee is approached and a long iron will set up a short but difficult shot to a U-shaped green. The back nine begins in the open but quickly retreats back to the trees and the small greens that are the trademark of this celebrated facility. By #15, the golfer has reached one of the toughest par 5’s in the country. Then come the acclaimed finishing holes set beside the water’s edge, memorable from their television images since this is the home of the PGA Tour’s MCI Classic- the Heritage of Golf. A windy day will create the toughest possible ending to a round that will live in the golfer’s memory. Harbour Town Golf Links is located at 11 Lighthouse Lane - 842-8484 SEA PINES COUNTRY CLUB This private club course was designed by Arnold Palmer in 1974 and offers the ambiance of a full service facility. The golf course, while short in overall length, is not to be taken lightly. Tight fairways lined with towering pines on every hole will demand accuracy rather than distance. The "risk / reward" factor is always present here and the beauty of the layout can often be distracting. No less than five doglegs dot the front nine and while the back nine straightens out, water enters the picture on eight of the last nine holes. The eighteenth is an impressive finishing hole sandwiched between marsh vistas and a long lagoon with the clubhouse as a welcoming backdrop to an ideal finishing hole. Sea Pines Country Club is a private club located at 30 Governors Rd. - 671-2345 Sea Pines Country Club Membership Designed for the entire family, Sea Pines Country Club enjoys a reputation as a high quality full-service private club. Harbour Town - CQ’s, Crazy Crab, The Quarterdeck, Harbourside Café, Café Europa Sea Pines Center - Truffles South Beach Village - Lands End Tavern, Salty Dog Café, South Seaport Café, South Beach Deli and Grill SHOPPING Harbour Town Unique shops, clothing and craft boutiques, art galleries and a gift shop atop the Harbour Town lighthouse are just some of the reasons for Harbour Town’s popularity. The setting itself takes a large share of the credit as the visitor strolls from one shop to the next against a backdrop of million dollar yachts docked at the marina. Take a break from your shopping and enjoy one of the many rocking chairs available for your people-watching convenience. Sea Pines Center Clustered within Sea Pines Center on Lighthouse Road in the center of the plantation, is another delightful selection of shops, boutiques and galleries. Several restaurants including Truffles add to the popularity of the center. South Beach Village A visit to South Beach Village is like a mini-visit to New England. Its unique look adds to the charm of the area and presents another opportunity to shop in quaint boutiques and galleries.
