GOLF

Since Hilton Head Plantation has the unique distinction of having the highest altitude on the Island, (28.24 feet above sea level), golfers often play with Port Royal Sound and the Intracoastal Waterway as their scenic backdrop. Numerous lush pines and ever-present wildlife add to the beauty of the setting.

There are four 18-hole golf courses within Hilton Head Plantation. Bear Creek Golf Club and Dolphin Head Golf Club are totally private. Hilton Head Country Club and Oyster Reef Golf Club are semi-private and therefore, open to the public.

BEAR CREEK GOLF CLUB

A private golf club featuring narrow, tree-lined fairways, Bear Creek requires careful course management. From the first hole with demands on the golfer. s short game, the combined design artistry of Rees Jones with a later modification by Arthur Hills, exhibits a classic approach to Lowcountry golf. The front nine ends with a blind shot on the eighth hole and an exacting par 4 of 426 yards on the ninth. On its continuing meander through the lovely pine tree setting, the second nine climaxes in a narrow par 5 with a deft touch to a lagoon side green and the finish to a true golf treat. Bear Creek Golf Club is located less than a mile from the front gate of Hilton Head Plantation on Whooping Crane Way. 681-9510

DOLPHIN HEAD GOLF CLUB

The design refinements of Gary Player and Ron Kirby are amply evident in this private golf club. The two nines offer different challenges and require the golfer to utilize both club selection and thoughtful shot making. Here we have a full range of experiences from rolling hills to lagoons, broad vistas, tight tree-lined fairways, near-seaside holes and never a dull moment. Attention is necessary from the first tee, a dogleg par 5 with an undulating green. The front nine winds through stately, towering pines and ends with a risk/reward par 5 hole. The back nine begins with more open expanses but clever arrangement. The fourteenth hole, although seemingly short and easy, can trap the errant golfer before ending in a marvelous vista overlooking Port Royal Sound. This majestic facility ends with a tournament style par 5 that will be remembered long after the game.

Dolphin Head Golf Club is located near Dolphin Head Recreation area, the northern-most tip of the plantation. 681-5550

OYSTER REEF GOLF CLUB

This Rees Jones designed golf club is semi-private and is part of the American Golf's facilities on Hilton Head Island. Honored as one of the top 25 new courses in 1983, it commands respect to this day. An easy beginning that then meanders through stands of tall fir trees, the course comes to a spectacular par 3 at the sixth hole. The view from both the tee and green is breathtaking with Port Royal Sound as a backdrop. The ninth typifies the inventiveness of the designer with a narrow dogleg, strategic bunkers, rolling green and the architect's trademark - - mounds that cause unwieldy lies. The back nine is unique with forced water carries and a brush along a forest preserve before ending in a long, demanding eighteenth hole. Oyster Reef Golf Club is located on High Bluff Road in the center of Hilton Head Plantation. 681-7717

COUNTRY CLUB OF HILTON HEAD

Set on the highest land on the Island, this unique semi-private club is strung out from a tree-lined front nine to scenic views of marsh and waterways on the back nine. At the Country Club of Hilton Head, Rees Jones has created another treasure that will test every golfer. From the short yet difficult first hole, the stage is set for specific shot placement. All of the par 3 holes have a forced carry over water or marsh. The subtle mounding, tight fairways, long lagoons and strategic bunkering continually demand the best efforts of every level of ability. The majestic twelfth hole, a par 5, rises to the highest point on the island and then flows to an oak-lined green that features a sweeping view of Skull Creek. This daunting layout ends with a tough par 5 that requires a long and well-placed tee shot that sets up entry to the broad but mounded finish to a two-tiered large green. The Country Club of Hilton Head is located at 70 Skull Creek Drive. 681-2582 It is the only country club in the plantation and offers two levels of membership:

Full Golf - Provides full club privileges, including golf, social, tennis and fitness activities. The golf program affords members a selection of dues levels and activity that recognize the fact that all golfers do not play the same number of rounds in a month or year. The election of arranging for 9 or unlimited rounds of golf can be made on a month-to-month basis and provides flexibility for non-resident members, as well as Members who travel. Includes preferred reservation privileges for starting times and complimentary range balls. An annual cart plan is available for more frequent golfers.

Club - Full club privileges, including social, tennis and fitness activities, and play golf on a space-available basis at a preferred daily rate.

Marshall's, Target Lowes and Home Depot are also a short drive from the plantation.

Main Street Village - Located just outside the main gate to Hilton Head Plantation is the Island's largest commercial area. Details of yesteryear (lamp posts, etched glass and park benches) make its overall design both charming and unique. Its proximity to the plantation along with a Harris Teeter supermarket, many specialty shops, restaurants (from casual to fine dining) and Dunes Marketing make Main Street an integral part of the Hilton Head Plantation lifestyle. Professional and medical offices plus several lodging options contribute to its popularity.

Festival Center - Across William Hilton Parkway (Hwy#278) - is the Festival Center where, once again, convenience and diversity rule. Publix Supermarket and Wal-Mart anchor the complex with shops and restaurants adding to the mix.
