COLLETON RIVER PLANTATION

Bordering the South Carolina nature preserve and a pristine river of the same name, Colleton River Plantation is perhaps the most exclusive golf community in the area. Occupying a unique niche in a world of exclusive neighborhoods, this 1,500 acre plantation offers two of the country`s top-100 ranked golf courses - and a setting that is truly incomparable. While only two miles from the Hilton Head Island bridge, life at Colleton River is a world apart.

As you would imagine, amenities are premium-class at Colleton River Plantation and generously balanced to favor the number of members. Golfers have their choice of Jack Nicklaus or Pete Dye signature courses - each acclaimed not only for its expert design but dramatic panoramas. An Augusta National- style par-3 course is also available.

While golf undoubtedly reigns supreme, Colleton River offers much more - like a Stan Smith tennis facility and swim club. For social events, Colleton River`s residents and guests look to the 30,000 square foot Charleston-style clubhouse overlooking the finishing holes of the Nicklaus course and dazzling sunsets of the Colleton River. Rounding out the list are deepwater docks, a marina, biking trails, expansive lakes and sweeping Lowcountry vistas. An additional clubhouse is under construction.

One-level homes have a minimum square footage of 2,400 square feet; 3,000 for two-story dwellings. Views vary with location from woods to lagoon to waterfront settings complete with private docks.

A "Cottage" community is also part of the plantation. These fully furnished and equipped homes have a wide variety of applications for use by members and guests. Each of the five four-to-seven bedroom Cottages has its own design. When completed, the club will feature a total of sixteen.

GOLF

Colleton River Plantation's Jack Nicklaus signature course has been on Golf Magazine's list of Top 100 courses since 1993. In 1999 the magazine also added the Pete Dye course, offering Colleton River Plantation the unique distinction of being the only private golf community in the world with two championship courses on the same Top 100 list. In addition to the two courses, practice facilities include target greens, chipping and putting greens and a comprehensive teaching program, as well as an Augusta National Par 3 course.

Jack Nicklaus Course - The senior of the two courses at Colleton River, this Nicklaus signature course solidified his design ability. From a calm beginning near the stately clubhouse, the course quickly tests the player with a long par 5 on #3 that has a waste bunker running virtually along the entire left side of the hole, followed by an island green at #3, a devilish hole in any conditions. The marshes simply add to the challenge. The par 4 ninth hole is a masterpiece woven between tall pines and salt marsh. The back nine is a profusion of varying conditions but as the fourteenth hole arrives, so does an amazing finishing scenario. Built into and along towering sand dunes, every shot must be considered. After the par 3 seventeenth hole brushes the Colleton River, the course turns for home in an epic finish between dunes and marsh.

Pete Dye Course - The newer of the two Colleton layouts is a classic links golf course. While there are nominal changes in elevation here at sea level, the eminent designer has majestically sculpted the contours and created rises that subject the golfer to the breezes from Port Royal Sound. This course winds beautifully through pine forests that demand solid shot making. Many approaches will be made from odd angles as the soft terrain mounding takes effect. Once the course opens to the water`s edge and the ever-present breeze, buffered by an occasional stand of large oaks, the golfer must focus totally on shot placement. Adding to the scenario are lagoons and bunkers and contoured greens that will daunt the best of golfers. Dye has carved out a showpiece here that will surely stand the test of time and rank with the many world-class courses that he has designed.
