Between the renowned resort destination of Hilton Head Island and the historically quaint seaport of Beaufort, lies the 880-acre sea island of Callawassie. Surrounded by the pristine waters of the Colleton, Okatie and Chechesee Rivers, Callawassie Island is a place of natural wonder, due in large part to the abundance of towering oaks, tall palms, stately pines and magnificent magnolias. While Callawassie Island may not exhibit as high a profile as some other nearby island resorts, this hidden jewel dazzled New Choices magazine two years in a row, who proclaimed it " One of the Top 20 Retirement Communities in America." Amenities at Callawassie Island include the Callawassie Island Club, 27-holes of award-winning Tom Fazio golf and four tennis courts. A clubhouse complex features a community pool, restaurant and meeting rooms. Another pool is available at the River Club along with a play yard for children and community dock for day boaters CALLAWASSIE ISLAND PROPERTY OWNERS’ ASSOCIATIONAnnual dues provide road maintenance, care of open-spaces and architectural review. THE NEIGHBORHOODWith a backdrop of lush natural beauty, Callawassie Island features custom single-family homes, charming club cottages and attractive townhomes. Upon completion, 724 homes are planned, approximately one per acre. While there is a stringent architectural review, residents may choose their own builder and architect. Views vary according to location and offer a choice of woods, lagoon, golf, or river vista. Rather than highly manicured lawns, grounds remain in their natural state in keeping with the environmentally diverse and relaxed nature of Callawassie Island. TENNISAlong with a host of other amenities, tennis enthusiasts at Callawassie Island can take advantage of four Har-Tru courts. A full-time teaching pro is on staff. GOLFAn active golf program is in place at Callawassie Island featuring a practice green, driving range and full-time teaching staff. Golf architect Tom Fazio designed the award-winning golf course. The 27-hole layout does little to disturb the idyllic marriage of salt-water marsh, meandering streams, giant oak forests and stands of towering pines. All these elements combine to make this Fazio-designed links course a prodigious golf experience. The golfer who desires a classic course surrounded by physical beauty will not be disappointed here. This is not a club to be taken lightly. Its finest attribute may be in the fact that every game will be unique - regardless of which set of nines is combined for a full game. A camera is a necessity for visitors and guests, particularly in late afternoon and early evening when the setting sun paints a not-soon-to-be-forgotten mosaic of great holes and magnificent vistas. |
