It wasn’t that long ago that Bluffton, SC was simply the charming little town you drove through on your way to Hilton Head Island. While there was a scattering of estates and plantations along the May River and in the surrounding area, Bluffton had little or no inclination of the attention it was to receive. When it was named "one of the best small towns to live in America," word got out and Sun City moved nearby. Today Bluffton has transformed itself from sleepy town status to one of the most vibrant areas in South Carolina. Distinctively different from the resort destination of Hilton Head, parts of Bluffton remain proudly rural with horse farms and thick woodlands. Along the streets of "downtown" Bluffton - an area comprised of one square mile - antebellum homes and historic churches still remain. It is a place that drips of Southern charm and culture, remarkably reminiscent of the way life was a century ago. The Bluffton/Okatie area extends along Highway 278 from Sun City to the west to Moss Creek Plantation to the east. Beyond the town limits, numerous housing developments and apartment complexes have been constructed. Several gated communities also front this busy corridor, as are outlet shopping malls and retail stores, doing their best to match the growth. Bluffton offers a wide array of communities, neighborhoods and housing options. THE RESIDENTSBecause of the many housing options that are available, Bluffton is home to a wide cross section of people. As you would expect, singles and young married couples tend to gravitate to the apartment complexes. Younger families are drawn to the single-family housing developments and more established couples and empty nesters, to the more affluent gated communities in the area.
